Teeth whitening and sensitivity explained

Why do we experience sensitivity with whitening treatment?

It is completely expected that patients experience some levels of sensitivity in the first 24-48 hours following a whitening gel treatment. The level of sensitivity and how long this sensitivity lasts is entirely dependent on the individual. This is because the prescribed hydrogen peroxide used in our whitening gel penetrates your tooth’s enamel to whiten the tooth, but by doing so, it exposes nerves just below the enamel. This can often feel like short, sharp instances of pain when breathing in cold air, drinking hot or cold drinks, brushing your teeth or eating sweet foods.

If the pain persists or is not easing, please contact your Smile White dentist for advice.

What if I already have sensitive teeth?

To ensure a minimal pain caused from sensitivity, it is crucial to consult with your Smile White dentist and be honest about your sensitivity issues so they can recommend what is best for you. New and improved modern whitening solutions are making it easier and safer than ever to whiten your teeth, with the supervision of a dental professional.

Our 16% hydrogen peroxide gel is formulated to balance effective whitening with minimal pain.

How do I manage sensitivity from teeth whitening?

While teeth sensitivity is normal throughout your whitening treatment, there are ways you can manage the mild pain it can cause…

  • Use a dentist-approved sensitivity toothpaste among your treatment time
  • Be gentle when brushing and make sure not to press on your gums and teeth too hard
  • Try to avoid drinking ice cold or hot drinks for the first couple of days to avoid sparking that shooting sensitivity pain
  • Drink through a straw so no liquid touches your teeth to cause any sensitivity sharp pains
  • Avoid overly sugary snacks and food for the first couple of days
  • Wear your whitening trays for the minimum time instead of over night if the sensitivity becomes too much
